The Balearic coastline has drawn seafarers for three millennia, but only in the last four decades has the jet ski transformed Mallorca's bays into accessible theatre. What once required a yacht and a crew now demands only a wetsuit and a morning window. The island's 550-kilometre perimeter holds more than eighty beaches, and the jet ski tour industry — born in the early 1980s alongside the first personal watercraft imports from Japan — has mapped a network of coastal routes that thread between limestone headlands, submerged caves, and the stone bastions of Palma's waterfront. Palma Bay remains the flagship stage. The cathedral rises 44 metres above the harbour, its Gothic sandstone facade visible from three nautical miles out. Bellver Castle commands the western ridge, a perfect circular fortress completed in 1311 and still intact. Jet ski routes from Passeig Cala Gamba trace the bay's southern arc, keeping within sight of these landmarks while crossing the shipping lanes that once carried Phoenician traders and Roman grain vessels. The water depth drops to 30 metres within 200 metres of shore, and the thermal stratification in summer months creates a temperature gradient that riders feel as they accelerate through cooler pockets. Alcudia Bay, 60 kilometres north, offers a different profile: shallow sandbars, calmer fetch, and a gentler learning curve for first-time riders. The bay's eastern flank borders S'Albufera wetlands, a Ramsar-protected marsh that supports 271 bird species. Tour operators here emphasise wildlife distance protocols — no closer than 100 metres to the reserve boundary — and most routes loop toward Formentor Peninsula instead, where cliffs rise 200 metres and the lighthouse marks the island's northernmost point. Cala Millor, on the eastern coast, serves as the departure hub for the island's longest circuits. Routes extend south toward Porto Cristo's marine caves or north to Cala Ratjada, with open-water segments that expose riders to the Mediterranean's prevailing easterlies. These tours require intermediate handling skills; operators screen for prior experience or mandate tandem rides with a guide. The water here is deeper and colder, fed by offshore currents from the Balearic Basin, and the coastline is less sheltered than the western bays.
